what you will find here
gallerykuma.com is where you can acquire kuma's work, made at chabana sansô in mizuo (kyōto) and in manigod (french alps). i make everything myself, from the first sketch to the parcel.
my main website: kumado.net
what kind of work?
- ceramics: tea pieces (chawans, gaiwans, cups), vases, sculptural pieces and more
- sculpture: wood, metal, clay
- photographs: prints of any photo from flickr.com/barbery
- software licences, including the calligraphy and seal tools of shonoma.com
every ceramic and every sculpture is one of a kind.
can i see the work in person?
yes, and whenever possible it is what i suggest: rather than having a piece posted, come and choose it, hold it, and take it home with you. the galleries in mizuo, kyōto (chabana sansô) and in manigod, france, are open by appointment. there will be tea.

what is a chawan? a gaiwan?
a chawan (茶碗) is the bowl in which matcha is whisked and drunk in the japanese tea ceremony. a gaiwan (蓋碗) is a small lidded cup in which tea leaves are brewed the chinese way, in short, repeated infusions.
neither is meant to stay in its box. a chawan is just as good for a café au lait, a soup or a dessert; a gaiwan works for any loose-leaf tea.
the box for tea pieces
chawans and gong fu cha pieces come in a paulownia box (tomobako) designed especially for them, for two reasons:
- no cords to tie. a traditional box is closed with cords that take some practice to knot; many people never learn, and the box ends up left open, its cords loose and twisted.
- the box opens by sliding one of its sides. open, it becomes a small portable alcove where the piece can be seen and shown, like a picture in its frame.
these boxes are only available in mizuo (not in manigod).
why this price?
a piece made by hand, fired or carved one at a time, carrying the marks of the kiln or the tool, has little in common with a factory object. in japan, a chawan is chosen the way one chooses a painting: it stays with you for a lifetime, and one day you pass it on.
how do i choose?
let the piece choose you. often a single detail catches the eye — sometimes an imperfection, and every piece here has some.
for a tea piece, a few questions can help:
- will it join tea utensils you already have, or be the centre of a new set?
- which season is it for? tall bowls warm the hands in winter, wide ones cool the tea in summer.
- what character are you drawn to: austere, joyful, rough, gentle, melancholic, playful?
- is it for yourself, for a guest, for a particular occasion?
ceramics: prices and what comes with each piece
- up to ¥20,000: careful cardboard packaging
- from ¥50,000: the paulownia box described above
- from ¥90,000: the same box, calligraphed by hand
can i order a print of a photograph?
yes. choose any photo on flickr.com/barbery, and you can order its printing and shipping here. the price depends on too many things to fit a fixed list: type of print, size, limited edition, framing, shipping. tell me what you would like, i will send you a quote, and you can pay for it online on this site.
what is a shonoma.com licence?
the tools of shonoma.com (seals, scripts, decorated papers…) are free to use. a licence lets you export what you make as images (png, svg) or as a font. it is a one-time purchase, with no expiry: ¥1,000 for personal use, ¥10,000 for professional use (tax included). your licence key is sent to you by email.
shipping
i ship worldwide, carefully packed. pieces are kept either in mizuo or in manigod, so depending on where i am, delivery can take from a few days to a few weeks. if you are in a hurry, please write before ordering.
sculptures and large pieces are shipped case by case: please write before ordering. licences are delivered by email, so nothing is shipped.
can my shop or gallery show your work?
yes. shops, galleries, restaurants, bars: if you would like to display and use some pieces, get in touch.
can you help me put together a set of tea utensils?
gladly — for chanoyu (kama, mizusashi, kensui, chashaku, hishaku, chasen, futaoki…) as well as for gong fu cha (fair cup, cups, tea tray…).

mon site principal : kumado.net
